A graduate in African-American studies form Brown University, Ellis is probably best known for starring opposite Cuba Gooding Jr in Men of Honor.
She first took to the stage in The Tempest on Broadway and made her TV debut in 1994 on New York Undercover and in 1997 had a recurring role on The Practice as Sharon Young for four episodes.
Ellis also appeared in the independent hit Caveman's Valentine opposite Samuel L Jackson.
Other big screen roles include Map of the World with Sigourney Weaver, In Too Deep and Ed's Next Movie.
She recently starred in Lovely & Amazing with Brenda Blethyn and as Sistah Girl in blaxploitation spoof Undercover Brother.
