Inventive in conception but limp in its resolution, this is cult director Hal Hartley's contribution to the passing of the Millennium. Initially witty and amusing - as Jesus returns to bring about the end of the world but has second thoughts - the irreverence of the beginning soon turns to tiresome philosophising, while the disappointing finale reveals that Hartley has nowhere left to go. Distinctively performed, smartly shot and imaginatively scored, the film has an appropriately other-worldly air about it, but sadly the contents of this particular Pandora's box aren't up to the wrapping.
