The Waterboy

Momma's boy Adam Sandler loves American football but, being an utter dimwit, is only qualifies to carry water for his local college team. But no brain means no fear and head coach Henry 'Fonzie' Winkler soon realises that he's got the league's best defensive player on his hands. With silly voice, a volatile temper and a penchant for pratfalls, Sandler's Bobby Boucher successfully takes the baton from Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison... and clatters everyone round the head with it. Kathy Bates plays Mama Boucher in a crunching comedy that grabs balls and runs with 'em.

The Waterboy

As American Football comedies go, this is pretty funny. Adam Sandler, sporting a goofy look and a Jerry Lewis voice, is Bobby, unpaid waterboy for the local squad down Bayou way - a mother's boy and the butt of the bullies. The coach fires him.

Mom (Kathy Bates) consoles him with her alligator pie, while sometime girlfriend Vicky (Fairuza Balk) would offer him something more if Momma didn't think she were the devil.

Bobby gets a new job with the state's most moth-eaten team and surprises them all by proving able to knock anyone flying when he's mad. The only problem is that Momma don't allow Bobby to play 'foozeball' and if she ever finds out...

A running gag about Bobby explaining his cuts and bruises with stories of being attacked by a gorilla results in Mom putting up a 'wanted' poster on the attacker.

Consistently chucklesome, the film's no masterpiece of comedy, but does contain a good variety of characters, including the assistant coach no one can ever understand, who has secret nipple rings under his ragged T shirt.
