A downright peculiar fable set in l9th-century central Europe, with another quirky performance from offbeat Aussie star Noah Taylor, here as the outcast of his Jewish community. This is hardly surprising as he claims to talk to the Devil - but he becomes a key figure in a battle for land and a new railway line. People who like very odd movies should lose no time setting their tapes for this one. Incidentally, Taylor will next be seen in cinemas as a young Adolf Hitler in Max.
