The actress has appeared in an impressive raft of high-profile movies including Girl, Interrupted, 21 Grams and Identity.
An only child, she graduated from the LA County High School for the Arts and the following year appeared as one of a group of Catholic schoolgirls dabbling in the occult in the film Little Witches.
In 1997 she made her TV debut in the movies On the Edge of Innocence and The Defenders: Payback, as well as guest roles on episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and ER.
These small screen appearances led to her starring comic debut in How to Make the Cruellest Month.
In 1998, she landed a best newcomer award for the thriller The Faculty and appeared in a number of minor movies until sci-fi thriller The Astronaut's Wife with Johnny Depp.
After Girl, Interrupted he next high profile outing was another sci-fi yarn - The Ghosts of Mars - and she subsequently appeared in the thriller Identity with John Cusack.
In 2003, she starred in the critically-acclaimed drama 21 Grams alongside Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.
In the same year, DuVall landed a key role in HBO's TV drama Carnivàle, a supernatural saga dripping with religious overtones set during America's Great Depression.
The 2004 remake of Japanese chiller The Grudge reteamed DuVall with her Buffy co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
