Nick Nolte has come a long way as an actor since his early days with TV's Rich Man, Poor Man, and his subtle, multi-shaded performance is the best thing on view in this sublimely elegant but dramatically turgid adaptation of a dusty period drama. An impoverished Italian aristocrat (Jeremy Northam) is to marry the unworldly daughter (Kate Beckinsale) of an art-dealing billionaire (Nolte) - to the chagrin of Northam's lover (Uma Thurman), who is desperate to keep him. All the actors have their moments but, despite lots of verbal sparring, this does drag on.
