The actor landed the lead role of Jamal Wallace opposite Sean Connery in Finding Forrester when he attended an audition for extras.
(He later claimed he needed the money to pay a $300 mobile phone bill and his grant had run out)
He saw a fly poster appealing for a 16-year-old who could play basketball to star in the Gus Van Sant movie.
Brown, who celebrated his sixteenth birthday just a week before filming, was awarded the Las Vegas Critics Award for Best Male Newcomer.
He subsequently moved into voice work, contributing the voice of Herne in the PlayStation 2 game Primal.
In 2005, he played a struggling college kid in the basketball drama Coach Carter alongside Samuel L Jackson.
Upcoming projects include The Orphan King, a drama starring Chris Evans.
