Ironically for a film about hairdressing, this comedy, written by Simon Beaufoy who penned the screenplay for The Full Monty, lacks body and bounce. The plot centres on the Yorkshire town of Keighley being the surprise choice to host the National Hair Championships. The scissorfest attracts the usual stereotyped contestants, but the question on everybody's lips is whether local 'hair apparent' Alan Rickman will come out of early retirement to compete. The cutting-edge cast also includes Natasha Richardson, Rachel Griffiths and Bill Nighy, plus mis-cast Yank heartthrob Josh Hartnett, who all do their best, but find things hairy because of the film's disturbing tendency to wander erratically between farce and tragedy. Things just don't gel! The funniest thing in the movie: San Francisco-born Hartnett's Yorkshire accent!
