Secret gardens always guarantee magic, and at the heart of this classic children's story by Philippa Pearce is one that 14-year-old Tom (Anthony Way) can enter when the clock strikes 13. There, Tom becomes a ghost in the past, befriending orphan girl Hatty. The time-warp story may be magical, but this dramatisation is flat - the effects are patchy and the acting, particularly by the children, is awful, with adults Greta Scacchi, James Wilby, Joan Plowright and Penelope Wilton faring scarcely better. Five stars for the story, but it has to struggle through such a stuffy coating.
