Despite luminous portrayals by its two young leads, Elaine Cassidy and Cillian Murphy, this is yet another UK-or-Irish film that not many people paid to see. Sinead (Cassidy) and Darren (Murphy), known to each other as Runt and Pig, were born together, live next door (they hold hands through their bedroom walls) and have been lifelong soulmates. Despite a background of domestic drunkenness and disturbance, they live happily in their own world, speaking a sort of South Central Irish patois. Pig, however, is also mentally troubled, a condition which, as he reaches 17 and starts to desire Runt, leads to greater and great outbursts of violence, often triggered by jealousy. This tale, fey and foul-mouthed at once, is clearly destined to end in tears, although they may be tears of boredom for the viewer. Ace performances, though, from two young Irish actors with a future.
