Despite a hefty chunk of bad language, this is a misleading title for an appealing portrait of two Edinburgh women and their ill-luck in love, which succeeds more through its winning performances than its contrived script. Gina McKee is excellent as Helena Bonham Carter's soulmate, who marries ne'er-do-well James Purefoy. Carter has one child, then another by Purefoy, the whole mess coming to a head at a catastrophic dinner party.
