When shy and slightly unstable Jean Simmons is accused of murdering her guardian's handyman, disgraced secret serviceman and part-time cataloguer of butterflies Trevor Howard comes to her rescue. Well paced and with enough twists and turns to keep you intrigued, this British thriller also has a strong romantic element, with the two stars delightfully understated as hero and heroine. A strong supporting cast includes early(ish) appearances by André Morell, Geoffrey Keen and Kenneth More (still three years away from Genevieve, the film that made him a star). The perfectly balanced story was created by Eric Ambler. Tension is maintained by director Ralph Thomas and the whole thing is beautifully photographed by top cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth.
