Director Richard Rush cut his teeth on low-budget exploitation films and then worked for a reported nine years on this extraordinary project, an outrageous black comedy that brought Oscar nominations both for Rush and for his leading man Peter O'Toole as a dictatorial film director who hires a man on the run as a stuntman on his latest picture. Packed with first-rate action and sly wit, the film demands close attention from its viewer - but proves worth the effort in the end. Rush's last film for 14 years until Color of Night (1994).
