An example of low-budget British film-making at its most abrasive, this little gem also did well in America where it grossed more than five million dollars. Hanif Kureishi's award-winning script is funny, sexy, violent and perceptive by turn and treats its central homosexual love story in an honest and low-key way. The gutsy pivotal performances of Daniel Day Lewis (remarkable as a blond punk) and Gordon Warnecke (as his business partner and lover) are complemented by Saeed Jaffrey's deliciously underhand uncle - a sort of Pakistani South London Arthur Daley - and by Shirley Anne Field as his white mistress.
