Thank goodness Hollywood resisted what must have been an overwhelming desire to call this fascinating and charming piece of whimsy something like The Queen and the Kid.

Irene Dunne makes rather hard work of being Queen Victoria, and loses out along the line to Andrew Ray - son of Ted - in the title role, and to Alec Guinness' brilliant Disraeli.
