Tom Selleck chose a good script for this cash-in on his Magnum success. It's engagingly set in 1939 where Lassiter, an American Raffles, is strongarmed into stealing millions in diamonds for the Nazis. Selleck is backed by good performances from both his leading ladies, Lauren Hutton, who enjoys herself in a Mata Hari role, and the underrated Jane Seymour. Warren Clarke and Bob Hoskins also register well as lethal influences in Lassiter's life, while Ed Lauter's engaging cockney interpolations as Lassiter's chief cohort clearly owe a lot to Dick Van Dyke's interpretation of the chimney sweep in Mary Poppins. This thriller certainly is different, and Selleck's own performance in the title role is spot-on.
