This lusty mixture of romance and melodrama, seasoned with flag waving World War Two propaganda, reunited the stars of the same year's The Spoilers and once again found John Wayne and Randolph Scott as rivals for the favours of Marlene Dietrich. Scott may get the girl but Wayne has the more substantial role and does well as a man who is ready to ride roughshod over everyone to get to the top but finally comes to see the folly of his ways. The director, Lewis Seiler, stages some vigorous action scenes but tends to take much of the film at rather too sedate a pace. The stars, however, carry all before them.
