One of the most innovative sci-fi films in years, the impact of this classic is undiminished by four lesser sequels and the inferior 2001 remake. Director Franklin J Schaffner makes Pierre Boulle's book into an exciting movie and a powerful allegory, using desolate Utah and Arizona locations for the planet on which Charlton Heston and his fellow space-travellers crash-land.

The boldest, most daring look into man's far future. Evolutionary changes to human beings are so scarcely embraced by science fiction - here we see it perfectly pulled off. Flawless acting from Charlton Heston, brilliant effects and a potent dystopian ending that strikes the senses. Second only to Stanley Kubrick's 2001 as the greatest sci-fi cinema ever made.
