David Lean's epic story of a self-willed Irish girl at the time of World War One, her unsuccessful marriage to a quiet teacher, and the consequences of her passionate affair with a shell-shocked English army officer. The film won two Academy Awards, one for its photography and one for John Mills who moved totally out of character as the misshapen village idiot. It also has outstanding performances by Robert Mitchum and Trevor Howard as teacher and priest, respectively. It is, however, monstrously long, and has love scenes that seem to have strayed out of a an old commercial for menthol cigarettes.
