James Mason's performance as the famous World War Two German field-marshal Erwin Rommel established him as a star in Hollywood after a tentative start to his career on the other side of the Atlantic.
This story involves not so much Rommel's North Africa campaign as his involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler (played by Luther Adler who took on the role again a year later in The Magic Face).
Under Henry Hathaway's cool, detached direction, the plot grips throughout.
