Jill Clayburgh, the delightful Hollywood actress who sounds as though she gargles honey, makes a silk purse out of a sow's ear in this freewheeling comedy. The film, mainly about the relationship between Ms Clayburgh, Burt Reynolds and a miscast Kris Kristofferson, tries very, very hard to be outrageous. That it succeeds in being merely quite funny is to our advantage. Reynolds' natural charm supplies most of the laughs - more, in fact, than are in the script. An extraordinary supporting cast includes Robert Preston, Carl Weathers, Lotte Lenya (the villainess in From Russia With Love), Brian Dennehy, Ron Silver and Richard Masur.
