Highly acclaimed in the United States, Paul Newman's small-screen version of Michael Cristofer's Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a prestigious film. Since it centres on three terminally ill people, its underlying theme is death. Uncompromising and poignant it may be, but it avoids being morbid and, indeed, carries with it a considerable vein of humour. It is also notable for some splendid acting, principally from Joanne Woodward.
