In making this underwater adventure yarn a stunt-man was killed by a shark. Freak weather conditions drove hundreds of the huge fish down the California coast into the Mexican waters, where star Burt Reynolds and director Samuel Fuller were filming. Famous underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau commented that despite its name, he had never before known a white killer shark attack a man in so vicious a manner which was little consolation for the relatives of Jose Marco.
