The centrepiece of this film, which combines drama and spectacle, is a massive crash on a freeway in Southern California during a holiday weekend. The graphic and impressive smash-up scenes were staged by Charles Picerni, one of Hollywood's top stunt co-ordinators. The story is of the multi-plot variety, involving a number of characters and dealing with the 48 hours in their lives preceding the crash, some of them played by 'related' actors - Buddy Ebsen and daughter Bonnie, Harriet Nelson (formerly Hilliard) and son David. You'll also spot a very young Tommy Lee Jones as a patrolman. The leading role, however, goes to Robert Conrad as a Highway Patrol officer who is involved in a high-speed chase in his search for a killer.
