Burt Reynolds brings his own tongue-in-cheek approach to this unlikely but attractively photographed tale of an archaeological expedition to New Guinea that ends up finding what might be the missing link, that unexpected gap in evolution between anthropoid apes and man. Engaging performances also from Susan Clark as a sniffy lady scientist, Roger C Carmel, Edward Fox and, in almost his last film, Australian veteran Chips Rafferty. In the supporting cast are any number of interesting people, including Britain's avuncular Wilfrid Hyde White; diminutive actress Pat Suzuki, who played the lead in the original stage version of Flower Drum Song; William Marshall, powerful black character actor; and Paul Hubschmid, the German-born actor who was from 1949 to 1956 a Hollywood star under the name Paul Christian.
