This delicately crafted movie offers us a chance, rare in today's cinema, to have a good cry. The story - about time-travel and a great love affair - doesn't quite hang together under close inspection, but the immense fondness with which director Jeannot Szwarc (with a little help from music by Rachmaninov) treats it, sees it through. Jane Seymour gets a real acting chance and proves herself a player of no mean ability. But the real triumph belongs to Christopher Reeve, who not only dominates the film, but shows great power to reach out and affect the emotions of an audience. A pity that the otherwise excellent ending goes too far: you may have to suppress a giggle through the tears.
