A funny-sad comedy-romance that has Burt Reynolds trying to decide between the respective attractions of ex-wife Candice Bergen and new lady Jill Clayburgh. As Bergen is no match for Clayburgh in both acting and charm departments, you can guess the outcome, but, though there are a few dead patches on the way, the script offers some nice laughs and a sniffle or two as well. The wry-faced Reynolds gives a peerless performance, again belying his muscleman image and even stealing the film from the luminous Clayburgh. Austin Pendleton also does a very nice job as Reynolds' bespectacled friend at the almost convincing men's divorce circle. Director Alan Pakula's efforts at making a charming film seem a little calculated, but they work quite a lot of the time.
