Star Trek The Motion Picture

The first big screen outing of the Starship Enterprise sees Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew trying to intercept a deadly forcefield that is heading towards Earth. Gone are the wonky sets of the long-running TV series and in come impressive special effects (courtesy of 2001's Douglas Trumbull) and assured direction from Robert Wise (who, bizarrely, also directed The Sound of Music). Trivia: Marked the first appearance of the "ridged-forehead" Klingons following budget restraints in the TV series.

Star Trek I

Fortunately, the Star Trek franchise survived this rather stodgy start to its cinema run.

Glamorous Persis Khambatta joins the Trek regulars, as a bald-headed Deltan beauty who forms part of a desperate Earth bid to reunite the original crew of the Starship Enterprise and stop an irresistible force travelling towards our planet.

Special effects are good, as well they might be in the hands of Douglas Trumbull of 2001 and Silent Running fame.

So are the set designs and Jerry Goldsmith's music.

But the cast often seems undecided whether the venture should be played straight or tongue-in-cheek. 'Dammit, Bones' growls William Shatner at one stage to DeForest Kelley, 'I need you - badly.'

Not as badly, Captain Kirk, as you needed some better lines in the script.

A decade a head of its time with outstanding special effects and plot that Kubrick would be impressed with. Star Trek the motion picture has to be the best big screen event which has trancended the decades! A must watch or "rewatch" film!
