Director Volker Schlondorff has pulled off a neat trick in this engrossing film. He has taken a tiny section of Proust's vast work Remembrance of Things Past and captured the essence of the whole thing in the story of a wealthy Frenchman besotted by a beautiful but promiscuous social butterfly (Ornella Muti). Good work by Alain Delon (cast against type as an infamous dandy), Fanny Ardant and Marie-Christine Barrault rounds off this portrait of elegant decadence in which a self-centred Parisian society and the nocturnal streets of the city are equally well captured by the colour cameras of Sven Nykvist.
