A splendidly silly farce which gave Ryan O'Neal his happiest role in years, repeating his 'What's Up Doc? ' persona as a bespectacled college professor forced to help out with the family clothing business when his father (Jack Warden) falls in debt to a seven-foot gangster (who else but Richard 'Jaws' Kiel? ). When Ryan falls in bed with the gangster's wife (sexy Italian star Mariangela Melato), everything is set for a sublimely scatty operatic finale with the cast acting out the last act of Verdi's Othello for real on the stage of the campus theatre. The stars perform heroically, with Andrew Bergman directing at a pace faster than Melato can get her clothes off, or Warden can cut the million pairs of see-through jeans that save his bacon. Even so, cavern-voiced Fred Gwynne, once Herman Munster of TV fame, steals it from all of them with a wickedly funny impersonation of the self-centred state university chairman.
