A stylish, extravagant and deliberately eye-catching John Carpenter enterprise set in 1997 Manhattan Island, the whole of which is walled in to create one vast prison to which very bad boys are consigned for the rest of their lives. When the US president crash lands there, a master thief (played by Kurt Russell with a Clint Eastwood whisper) is given 24 hours to earn an amnesty by getting him out. His exciting and often fearsome adventures in the attempt form the body of the story. One scene of a boxing ring turned into a gladiatorial arena is really imaginative both in conception and execution, as Russell and a massive opponent do battle with spiked clubs.
