Inspired by the success of Whisky Galore! , British film-makers turned out so many similar comedies in the next few years that it seemed the entire English coast must have been a seething nest of rum-runners and smugglers. This film was made co-operatively by members of the Association of Cine Technicians, who formed themselves into ACT Films. The scene is the Kent marsh country and the spirit in question is brandy. Although its brand of whimsy is rather far behind Ealing Studios, Green Grow the Rushes has amusing performances by Roger Livesey as Captain Biddle and Harcourt Williams as a chairman of the Bench. It was Richard Burton's last British film before he went to Hollywood the next year.
