Visually handsome adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's popular children's novel, turned by MGM into a charming vehicle for Margaret O'Brien in 1949. This remake remains steadfastly faithful to the book, and is similarly disinclined to shy away from the serious subject of bereavement. It also benefits from some top-notch character acting by Michael Hordern (as the curmudgeonly gardener Ben) and Billie Whitelaw (perfectly cast as the Dickensian housekeeper Mrs Medlock). An engrossing couple of hours for adults and youngsters alike.
