Slick, sophisticated satire aimed squarely at the con-man and sharks of the immediate post-war American advertising world. Clark Gable is at his suave, fast-talking best as brash Vic Norman, who takes New York's ad-world by storm - then finds rough weather brewing when he clashes with a sadistic soap magnate, played with dictatorial perfection by Sydney Greenstreet. It was Deborah Kerr's first Hollywood film, but it was Ava Gardner who most boosted her Hollywood stock, displaying a gift for satirical comedy which few suspected she possessed.
