A bleak and brutal account of how a sadistic millionaire cattleman and his hunting friends pursue the bandit (Oliver Reed) who has kidnapped the millionaire's wife. The Spanish settings stand in convincingly for Texas and, although Gene Hackman is never completely happy in a role as one-shaded as the millionaire, Candice Bergen suffers splendidly as the wife who finds herself attracted to her captor. This followed hard on the heels of her other hell-and-high-water Western role in Soldier Blue, but didn't deter her from hitting the trail again a couple of years later in Bite the Bullet: coincidentally Hackman was again her co-star.
