This is the real-life story of the romance and subsequent marriage of Lou Gehrig, star baseball player of the New York Yankees, whom tragedy strikes when, as still a young man, he learns that he has an incurable disease. The story was first told in the cinema early in the Forties when Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright co-starred in The Pride of the Yankees. This later TV movie has Blythe Danner and Edward Herrmann teamed in the title parts, with Ramon Bieri playing baseball legend Babe Ruth, and Patricia Neal cast as Lou's possessive mother. Director Fielder Cook tries to keep a brake on the sentiment but can't, although the film does contain sensational performances from Blythe Danner as Eleanor and (briefly) Lainie Kazan as Sophie Tucker.
