An adult and unsentimental drama, one of a wave of British realist dramas of its time. Putting a marriage on the rocks under a magnifying glass, it brings into focus the faults on both sides. Anthony Quayle and Yvonne Mitchell are magnificent as the couple under scrutiny, Mitchell especially deserving praise for allowing the make-up department to turn her into such a spectacular drab.
