George Cukor, almost every Hollywood actress's favourite director in the Thirties, was the ideal man to put at the helm of this all-woman show about a wife coerced by her catty circle of friends into seeking a divorce she doesn't really want. A starry cast takes full advantage of the bitchy dialogue, adapted by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin from Clare Boothe's original play. The all-claws-out approach is led by Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Mary Boland and Hedda Hopper. One sequence in colour.
