Easily the most memorable version of Emily Brontë's romantic novel, with haunting characterisations by Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon as Heathcliff and Cathy. Olivier had wanted Vivien Leigh for the role, but, under William Wyler's persuasive direction, Oberon gave the best performance of her career. The film was nominated for numerous Academy Awards but on the night won only one: it went, however, to the most deserving of all nominees - Gregg Toland, whose evocative black-and-white photography in this film has been seldom equalled. Remade twice (to less effect) in 1970 and 1992.

A beautiful but sad, cold haunting tale of two people so in love with each other, but sadly also so in love with themselves, or at least both caught up in what they aspired to be, or thought what they believed what they should be. Both too quick to point the finger of blame at each other for why they didn't spend a life of bliss together (A bit like the Divorce Courts today me tinks!) At least in death they did come together, after a life full of hatred & love for each other.
