Mighty are the depths to which the wicked Lady Barbara sinks in this hoary old period tale of a woman with a thirst for danger and adventure, revamped for the modern cinema by director Michael Winner, with Faye Dunaway in the old Margaret Lockwood role.

Some of photographer Jack Cardiff's colour compositions are so good, catching the period flavour in their crowd scenes especially, that they might grace a masterpiece.
