A warm welcome for this Western of confrontation, set in an Arizona ghost town. Director William Wellman, expert purveyor of man-sized action, makes it gritty, suspenseful and exciting, and there are sharp-edged portraits from Gregory Peck (always best when cast against his, seemingly natural, gentle type), Anne Baxter (also enjoying a change of pace, as a rifle-toting tomboy) and sharkish John Russell. But no-one out-acts Richard Widmark, offering another of the smiling psychopaths that decorated his early years in films. Jay Silverheels, later to saddle up as The Lone Ranger's TV partner, can be spotted as an Indian.
