Pretty nasty and effective by 1956 standards, this early Hammer horror film has the benefits of sinister black and white photography by Gerald Gibbs and the presence of such sterling players as Dean Jagger, Edward Chapman, Leo Mckern and William Lucas. And the familiar faces of Michael Ripper and Anthony Newley crop up as two of the soldiers battling a mysterious `something' that creeps up from a bottomless fissure created by an atomic explosion on the Scottish moors. Leslie Norman's direction misses few chances to point up the shock moments - and there are plenty.
