Gaslit melodrama, nicely photographed in black and white by John F Seitz, and with a winning performance by Teresa Wright as the dancer who becomes involved in murder after being forced to call off her love affair with a prospective MP. A pity the screenplay fails to convince, but Lewis Allen's direction conjured up the right atmosphere, and Anthony Quinn makes his mark with a sincere, straightforward performance as a pianist unjustly accused of killing a pawnbroker. Ray Milland is the lover.
