John Cassavetes fans will enjoy this drama about a mentally unstable woman who descends on her philandering brother to sort herself out, since it contains themes and characters from many of his previous `angst' films, all drawn together here. Though slow in development, the film has a surprising amount of comedy for a Cassavetes film, plus fantasy sequences which sometimes leave the audience with too much guesswork. Cassavetes himself stepped into the role of the brother (his real-life wife Gena Rowlands is the woman) when Jon Voight, who created the role on stage, pulled out at a late stage. In the supporting cast, there's a rare appearance by Doe Avedon, a star of the Fifties who retired to marry director Don Siegel.
