Journey's End, R C Sherriff's classic, if downbeat play about life in the trenches during World War One, is reworked as a drama about fliers in the Royal Flying Corps by screenwriter Howard Barker. The resulting film boasts some fine aerial sequences (directed by Derek Cracknell), but the dramatics on the ground soar rather less and the characters lean towards cliché. Leading players Malcolm McDowell and Simon Ward are backed by a solid roster of guest stars that includes John Gielgud, Ray Milland and Richard Johnson.
