Despite George C Scott's convincing portrayal of a marine biologist, this is a cumbersome mixture of science-fiction, spy thriller and heavy-handed comedy. The political misuse of talking dolphins seems an odd choice of subject for writer Buck Henry and director Mike Nichols (the team responsible for The Graduate and Catch-22) and the film comes alive only in the underwater sequences, superbly photographed by William A Fraker.
