Another of French director Claude Lelouch's finally-they-met convergent romances, this time set in the old West. In this picturesque setting a French immigrant (Geneviève Bujold) is destined to meet a veterinarian, played by James Caan. Going through the tragedies that bring this about would give away too much of the plot; suffice to say that the film has an amount of charm, if perhaps not quite enough to see it through its lengthy running time. Caan fans will enjoy the sight of him doing some unexpected things, such as playing billiards on horseback, and feeding (and changing) a baby. They may object though, to the director's insistence on shooting everything through a yellow lens to convey a sense of period, a device that proves rather trying to the eyes.
