Not half bad as American TV `illness' films go. This stars Edward Asner, who, as genial newspaper editor Lou Grant underwent throat cancer surgery in an episode of the TV series, as a genial magazine editor who undergoes treatment for a rare bone disease. Based on the autobiographical book by Norman Cousins, editor of the influential Saturday Review, it transfers to the screen as an inspiring study of mind over illness and the incredible regenerative powers of the human body. It's a starring vehicle and Asner delivers the goods. He successfully fleshes out Cousins' character and elicits total sympathy for his painful plight. The rest of the cast is relegated to 'supporting' roles in every sense.
