The Spanish Civil War serves as a turbulent setting for a love story in which Dirk Bogarde's priest with doubts recognises the true worth of Ava Gardner's flighty singer. The casting of the two principals is imaginative but not wholly successful. 'It should have done for Ava what Two Women did for Sophia Loren,' said Bogarde. 'In the end I just hoped we could bank the money and then quietly forget it ever happened.' Nevertheless, writer-director Nunnally Johnson ensures that the wheels are well enough oiled.
