This big, expensive action film, adapted from a coffee-table bestseller by Robert Penn Warren, tended to acquire the reputation of a poor man's Gone With the Wind, set as it is in the southern states at the time of the American Civil War, and with Clark Gable as its star. Acting honours, however, are stolen by Sidney Poitier as a rebellious overseer. Lucien Ballard's WarnerColor photography sets off the action in handsome fashion, especially in a chase scene through swamplands.
